Ooo...
I should check my PMs on boards more often... for it seems that Rob and I are going to Maelstrom after all, courtesy of the God-like Bill Pennington and his lovely offer of crew places for us! See, we helped out a bit last event with cleaning of the loo and shower blocks, and now have been offered crew positions to continue this. Obviously, this cuts down on our RP time, but that's absolutely fine by me - it's not as if I stay IC all the time anyway. So, Maelstrom goers - if you have a problem with the cleanliness of the facilities this weekend, find me and tell me. If I'm not IC when you want me - tough, I'm earning my ticket. | | Saturday, August 29th, 2009 | | 1:20 pm |
Social Life - I has one!
Last night was a huge amount of fun, involving good, reasonably priced cider, caves, rock music, pool, rock karaoke, prawns and a cheap taxi ride home. I think I love Nottingham. OK, with a bit more sense... Rob, Kate, Chris, Gerwyn and I went out to the Salutation pub for the night. Kate went home early with contact lens isues, but the four of us who stayed had much fun and games. Turns out the pub, as well as playing rock music rather than usual pub-pop, is CAMRA associated, and has multiple cider options all the time - this is very good. I tried two types last night, both of which were tasty and cheap (£2.50 for a bottle that is over a pint). Cue more drinking. Gerwyn showed us round the caves under the pub - very awesome, and hireable for LRP. I have plans... Maelstrom player event possible, certainly good for a Havocstan Officer's Mess. Will find out about cost. After that we wandered up to the "club" bit - which is basically a very small dancefloor and some tables, but kinda cool nonetheless - to *watch* the karaoke. Watching was fun, and there were a few talented singers. I flirted shamelessly with a dress that had a girl in it, and swapped email contacts to find a decent costume maker. Then, something went wrong, but before I knew what was happening I had signed up to sing and ended up on stage, blushing so red I could have exploded, attempting to sing "Stand and Deliver". Oh dear. Rob and Gerwyn sang "Tribute" later on, as well. I have a feeling that cider and sensible behaviour do not work together. The night ended with the pleasant discovery that we can get a taxi home from the city centre for less than £8, which is good to know, and that there is a Greggs near the cab office that stays open until 4am. Cornish pasties are probably better than kebabs... Oh, yes, and there is a chap called Dave who wanders around the pubs at night selling prawns, mussels and cockels. This is a truely awesome thing. I had two lots of prawn cocktail, which are far more satisfying than pub crisps!! | | Tuesday, July 28th, 2009 | | 10:22 pm |
Maelstrom has nearly killed me dead! But it was an awesome event. To summarise GOOD-Gold award for my home-made cheese ( I worried that I won because mine was the only actual homemade recipe, but the judges came and found me OC to tell me how much they loved ti, and I've had to recall and recite the method/recipe a dozen times or more!). -Silver award for my Gooseberry jam (only entered last minute when we found a forgotten jar in the cupboard!) -Gold award for Rob's turbo-cider (much, much more of which will be made ready for next event) -An actual photo of my actual character that I actually like -Not dying -Not even getting hit -Getting threatened -FEAR of eidolon -Jaguar-style "stealth" following the news of Flail's return. "Shhhhhhhhhhhhh! We have to be STEALTHY! There might be DEMONS! WE HOPE THEY DON'T FIND US!!!!!" -Kicking over a hornet-nest with what I thought was a relatively minor death to anyone outside the faith, and waking up to an incredibly annoyed General, the return of the war-machine, summoning of eidolons and a full-blown tantrum on my part -Finding, stroking, nagging for and eventual stealing of an awesome jacket -Being made General for a night because of the awesome jacket -Dram's face when I told him that I had told General Schmidt he had promoted me to General... -Prowess competition - I have nightmares... BAD-Losing the satchel with the van keys and therefore spending Friday night OC panicing... and then finding the satchel under some stuff, where I had been told had been checked -Being reassured by a ref that if the van keys weren't found, "talented" crew could probably get into it anyway - I'm sure she meant to calm me down with that, but I have Issues surrounding lockable doors... -Feeling utterly crap the day after the event, and having to ignore being ill in order to move heavy, heavy furniture into the new house -Not getting to stay up late frothing as much as I wanted due to sleepiness -Having to give the awesome jacket back to it's rightful owner... my life does not include enough braid and frogging, you know :( | | Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009 | | 9:49 am |

Selling - Beloved Singer Machine
Despite loving it dearly, and wanting to keep it forever and ever, I simply do not have room for my lovely 1915(ish) Singer any more. It is a large piece of furniture (cabinet-housed), and heavy, and simply too big for my lodgings. I therefore invite any interested people to have a look here - http://s679.photobucket.com/albums/vv154/m edabeaks/Ribbons/ and see if they might be interested. Make me an offer - if all else fails it will be on eBay in a couple of weeks. Please note you would need to pick it up either before I move house, from South Wales, or after I move house, from Nottingham. It is in working order, though it needs a new footplate I think... it really is quite lovely for anyone who enjoys sewing. | | Thursday, July 9th, 2009 | | 7:17 pm |
Apple & Elderflower Biscuits
Because it was requested: here follows the recipe for lovely biscuits of lovely... 1: Preheat oven to 190c/ Gas 5 2: Cream together 4oz unsalted butter (works best if this is at room temperature, not chilled) and 3oz caster sugar until fluffy. 3: Beat in one egg yolk and 1/2 tsp of mixed spice 4: Add 1 oz of chopped, dried apple pieces and 7oz of self-raising flour (I find it helps to mix in about a quarter of this at a time, not all at once). The mixture should form a stiff dough, but if it's too crumbly you can add a splash of milk (or use a splash of apple juice to enhance the appley flavour) 5: Roll out to about 1/4 inch thickness, and cut into your preferred shape. Place on non-stick baking sheets (or use baking paper, NOT GREASEPROOF) and bake for about 10 minutes, or until they are golden and just beginning to brown at the edges. 6: Use a palette knife or spatula to move onto a wire rack to cool. 7: When the biscuits are completely cool, sift 7oz icing sugar into a bowl and mix in just enough elderflower cordial to make a thick but pourable paste (I found this to be about 5 tablespoons). Splash liberally all over the biscuits (this bit is really quite messy, so I put down foil first), then sprinkle some granulated sugar over the top. Leave to set (this takes longer then you think it wil). 8: Eat. Smile. Make more. | | Wednesday, July 8th, 2009 | | 7:27 pm |
Biscuits
Om Nom Nom... I have made some lovely Apple & Elderflower biscuits... they are really nice and crunchy, and hopefully keep quite well, as they are being posted to Rob's sister and mum for sampling. I've agreed to make biscuits for Vic's wedding, you see, so will be trying out a few recipes. My one issue with these is that they have soft dried apple pieces in them, which make the mixture a bit bumpy, and Vic wants these really cute little animal shapes that don't lend themselves to bumpy cookie mix... If anyone is interested though, I could put up pics and/or recipe? | | Monday, June 29th, 2009 | | 7:55 pm |
Noise
I can't remember the last time everything was just... silent. I'm getting really freaked out sometimes at work from the sheer level of noise in the place and it's bringing on panic attack symptoms sometimes. At one point today my heart started to absolutely race, and my stomach lurched like I'd come to an emergency stop... I'm super-busy at work anyway, and I find it so hard to concentrate with all the noise in the building (it's open-plan, about 600 people in the building, plus computers and phones and printers and fax machines and photocopiers and buzzing lights) and if I can just listen to my music I can phaze it all out and actually get some work done - but then today, having been allowed to secretely have my iPod on, the senior boss found it and actually took it away and locked it in her drawer until home-time like I was a naughty child! I really, really need some peace and quiet... no telly, no computer, no neighbours, no cars... I have a constant headache and feel so crowded it's unbelievable... I wish these little racing pulse episodes would stop as well, it's so unnerving when it happens and I've tried cutting down caffiene and everything but it makes no difference. I could have screamed at work today it was so loud... I made a calender to mark off my last few weeks... I crossed off the first of 25 working days left this afternoon. 24 more. I do wish they'd all shut the fuck up though. | | Saturday, June 27th, 2009 | | 4:08 pm |
He he...
Rob is watching Dune, and attempting to convince me he is not confused. His forehead crinkles tell me otherwise... (He has not read the book, nor seen the film before. He has no chance!) | | Thursday, June 25th, 2009 | | 8:48 pm |
It's amazing...

Away
As of soon, I will be away until Sunday 21st June. If you need me, try my mobile (if you don't know the number, tough). YAH! Maelstrom!!!! | | Sunday, May 31st, 2009 | | 11:22 am |
Jealousy
So - people are off to Southsea today... but I have to wait a whole 'nother week! GRR! Oh well... I'll live, I suppose. In the meanwhile, I have lots of things to get on with - painting blackboards, for one, which is a hellish job as the paint goes EVERYWHERE and doesn't come off easily... to town for white spirits later, methinks! I am being far more organised than usual for Maelstrom this event - all my hardware is packed, apart from a few things that need washing and/or mending. I have all my lammies and monies in a safe, memorable place. By the end of today I'll have my clothing ready. All is well. Apparently my advert for The Daggers went out in the event packs, which is good - what is NOT good is that our packs didn't arrive yet! | | Tuesday, May 26th, 2009 | | 7:01 am |

Aargh! Sun!
Today the summer has officially started, because I had to put on suncream before starting the war on the garden. My poor delicate goth-skin... The war on brambles and weeds progresses well, however, with approximately a third of the garden now cleared, and a mountain of debris ready to be burninated later this evening. I am very pleased that our little apple tree is still going strong, and will be coming with us to Nottingham (it lives in a pot, you see, and when we eventually buy our on home it will be planted out!). Nottingham plans are well underway also, as Rob is applying for every science teaching post that comes up in the vicinity and I'm applying for *sigh* admin. I'm not too worried if I don't find anything though, as I'll throw myself onto the tender mercies of the temping world if need be. Rob will be doing supply teaching, as he has now officially signed up with a good agency (who have a Nottingham branch, and will transfer him over), and has already done one afternoon of work. Annoyingly, it is now half term... stupid holidays... I am handing in my notice at work at the end of June, to end on Friday 31st of July - joy! ( Busyness )( Family )I think that's it for now. Hugs to everyone! | | Thursday, May 14th, 2009 | | 9:33 pm |
Wolverine
Meh... coulda been a lot better. Gambit doesn't say a single damn French word. My childhood crush has been despoiled... Good fights. That's about it. In other news - we have much that is alcoholic for Maelstrom already, with three weeks to go. Following a slight vodka-based explosion, we also have a somewhat sticky kitchen. Never mind though - at least the treacle beer hasn't gone boom! Politics and heresy are abounding in the run-up to Event 2, and I am more than super-excited! In news on the Great Escape - we has a housemate (lovely Kate who is Lovely), and job applications are going. I'm handing in my offical notice at work end of June, finishing forever on the 31st of July. We will be moving in the first couple of weeks of August, and hopefully settled in time for September. We are currently looking for a 4 - 5 bedroom place, which looks affordable between the three of us, and we'll be in the city of Nottingham itself, as Kate needs to be near stuff. So - exciting! All in all, thigns are good, and getting better. But Woverine was still a bit of a let-down... | | Wednesday, May 13th, 2009 | | 8:41 am |

New favourite quote...
From the friends' feed on my facebook... "Only LARPers would need a word for just being normal." Oh yes... because we are THAT special... | | Tuesday, April 14th, 2009 | | 9:56 am |
Maelstrom
So incredibly tired... but considering it was pretty much BEST MAELSTROM EVAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR, I guess it's worth it. So much to froth about - and so much I probably shouldn't say! I think I will have to limit myself to speaking to people one-on-one. Suffice to say, Lilith is alive, Maxim isn't, and the Daggers will return... and I have never looked forward to an event as much as I'm looking forward to event 2 this year... | | Monday, April 6th, 2009 | | 7:18 pm |
Panic Station...
Have spent £75 on stuff for the bar. Still need: - Flour, eggs, milk for pancakes (will buy from local supermarket lest exploding flour/eggs/milk occur in van) - Donated alcohol from nice people - The Bar (being brought by Harry) - The Tent (pick up on way to event) - Gas for stove - Pans and cooking implements (scrounged from around the house) In general, I still need to do lots of things: - Wash, pack kit things (and try not to bring every bit of costume I own) - Waterproof/ polish new boots - Find all the little bits and bobs that make Lilith (eyepatch... where the f*ck is that eyepatch?) - Sort out OC camping things - bedding, pillows, towels, toiletries - DO NOT FORGET ANTIHISTAMINES, PLASTERS AND PAINKILLERS!!! - Find my lammies and IC money... - Tidy house so Mum won't ge mental when she comes to feed cats There are probably other things too, but I have already forgotten them... bugger... | | Friday, April 3rd, 2009 | | 9:46 pm |
Today I wore unsuitable boots to work, to break them in. I got home and moved bottles of home-brew scrumpy. I swore at the ten-day weather forecast. I then burned small wooden tokens with a simple yet disctinctive symbol. I painted gold decoration onto a domino mask. I will now return to the sewing of panels into a dress that wouldn't cope with my bust. Yep, it's nearly Maelstrom again!!! |
